Before my transformation, I was in a dark place. I was going through a bad breakup and fell into depression. This, in turn, led me to alcohol abuse. But all of that changed when I started focusing on my health. There was an immediate change in my relationships with coworkers, family and friends.
About six months after I started changing my body, I met a beautiful girl at the gym. We just celebrated our one-year anniversary. Another positive change that happened was in my career. During my tough times, I was aloof and barely spoke to my associates.
I would go into work with my ear buds in, head down, and would not want to speak to anyone. I was crashing badly.
But after my transformation began I moved departments. Six months into my new role, I was promoted to a salaried position. I also just celebrated my seventh year with the company.
None of this would’ve been possible without my support system.
My best friend and training partner Andy was a big reason for my transformation. We went through some tough times but I came out better for them. Having a strong support system was paramount in my change being a successful one. He brought me new ideas, changes, encouragement and new programs.
It’s very important to surround yourself with positive and supportive people.
Becoming a Physique Competitor
After I went through my transformation, I decided to pursue a new goal. I heard a conversation in the gym where a pro natural bodybuilder was talking about diet, etc. After thinking about it for a few days, I began looking into diet changes. I decided to go for it. I talked to a coach the next day and began the process. With 11 weeks until competition, I powered through my competition prep.
After 316 trips to Gold’s Gym, 84 trips to the gym at my corporate campus, countless outdoor cardio sessions, a perfect diet, 2+ hours of cardio (seven days a week for the last 11 weeks) – I reached 4% body fat and was 163 lbs.
When I finally got on that stage, I experienced a whirlwind of emotions.
Some of what I felt was relief knowing that I was done. I was on a ketosis diet for my prep and it was very difficult. Should I get on stage again, I’ll definitely go a different route. But besides that, it was an amazing moment for me. My friends and family were there to see my work and I was proud. It was also the first time I performed in a competition where my father was able to watch. The hard work and dedication to get there was all worth it
Now, I’m really enjoying my life and what’s ahead for me. I’m looking to compete in more competitions in the future and to continue pushing myself. If there’s one thing I leave you with, it’s that you must strive for the change you wish to be. You must work for it and own it.
